Dovevano tornare a nascondersi.

Defeated: Italy’s fascist regime, but not the arrusi

Italy’s “Liberation Day” (Festa della Liberazione) is celebrated on April 25th every year. It commemorates the end of the Italian Civil War and the liberation of Italy from Fascist rule during World War II.

As the tide of the war turned, many Italians began to resist the Fascist regime and to support the Allied forces. On April 25th, 1945, Italian partisans, along with Allied troops, staged an uprising against the German occupation forces in northern Italy.

The fighting continued for several days, but ultimately the Italian resistance was successful in driving out the German forces and liberating many parts of the country. The liberation of Italy was a turning point in the war, and it marked the end of fascist rule in Italy.

On Liberation Day we commemorate the end of fascism and the restoration of democracy in Italy.

This Liberation Day we commemorate the arrusi and all the homosexuals persecuted under the fascist regime. By remembering these men, we reflect on the sacrifices that they made in the face of adversity.

And we remember that once liberation came, these men were still not free.
