Here is the full text of our original interview with Amazing Puglia for their magazine’s bumper summer 2021 edition. In English and then in Italian. Amazing Puglia used the Italian text which was subsequently edited.

What is the pink tourist dollar?

Cos'è il dollaro turistico rosa?

The pink tourist dollar (or euro or pound sterling), refers to the purchasing power of the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) tourist and the economic advantage that it brings to the local tourist economy.

LGBTQ tourism is a lucrative market. In just seven European countries (Germany, UK, France, Italy, Spain, Poland and the Netherlands) the combined market value of LGBTQ tourism is already €64 billion and expected to grow 1.4% per year on average.

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) 2nd Global Report on LGBT Tourism recognises that the LGBTQ tourist market can be a powerful vehicle for economic development and competitiveness of tourist destinations, finding that LGBTQ tourists travel more often and spend more on vacation.

Many destinations actively market themselves to LQBTQ tourists. More than ever hotels and destinations are welcoming the LGBTQ market in a more accepting manner and helping them celebrate weddings, honeymoons and other special occasions.

Puglia is an interesting example. Italy ranks in 35th place out of 49 European countries in the European Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association 2021 benchmarking of rainbow Europe. Nevertheless gay travel influencers currently consider Puglia to be one of Europe’s top 5 gay destinations for LGBTQ travellers. Only Sitges and Gran Canaria (Spain), Mykonos (Greece) and Tel Aviv (Israel) rank above Puglia.

Unlike those other destinations Puglia’s public bureaus and private companies do not, as far as we know, target the LGBTQ traveller. US and UK gay travel sites and magazines are full of adverts enticing gay travellers to these destinations, selling us their fantastic beaches and guaranteed good weather. We never see any advertising selling Puglia to the gay tourist, but yet there it is at number 5!

There is a real opportunity for Puglia to benefit and grow its market share of the pink tourist dollar, especially important as our region’s tourist industry tries to recover post-covid. It seems an easy win for Puglia given that it already has a strong reputation as a top gay destination. But we will have to work for it. These days LGBTQ travellers have more travel choices internationally and many other countries and destinations are actively looking to boost their LGBTQ visitors.

What business does gay tourism generate in Puglia?

The LGBTQ tourist has the same needs as any other. To get to and travel around Puglia, to find suitable accommodation, to discover the best our region has to offer, and to eat the cuisine that Italy and our region in particular is famous for.

We love Puglia’s beaches, the historic medieval white towns and the rolling olive groves. We even like a pasticciotto for breakfast, although forgive us if we drink it with an Americano coffee.

Like any tourist, from the moment we arrive in Puglia to the moment we leave (and even after we are home if we are unlucky to receive a fine for driving in a ZTL, one of the great mysteries to foreign travellers) we generate business for the local economy. We spend on accommodation, restaurants and bars, tour guides, beach clubs and museums and buy souvenirs and gifts to bring home, especially Puglia’s amazing olive oil and taralli.

But the key difference is brand loyalty. Get us here and not only will we spend more, we are likely to come back - and tell the world just how good a time we had.

What do you propose to see?

Cosa proponete di vedere?

Three highlights that The Big Gay Podcast from Puglia (www.gaypugliapodcast.com) always recommend are the coastal drive from Santa Cesarea Terme to Leuca, the drive through the salt marshes of Margherita di Savoia to Vieste along the stunning Gargano coast, and cycling or driving the Valle d’Itria’s back roads around Savelletri, Fasano and Cisternino to enjoy some of the finest examples of the UNESCO protected dry walls and millennial olives groves - simply stunning.

Santa Maria di Leuca is a personal favourite destination. It feels that we have reached as far as we can go (and, of course we have). It is the perfect place to recharge away from the crowds.

What are the most popular places for LGBT + tourists and why?

Gay men tend to travel to urban destinations and are more interested in gay events and nightlife activities than others. Most gay men like to meet locals and other like-minded gay men when travelling.

Lesbians enjoy more rural destinations and nature tourism. Agriturismo is particularly popular among them.

Older travellers enjoy luxury accommodation frequently found in the wonderful masserie Puglia has to offer, accompanied by good food and fine wines. Younger people enjoy the vibrant beach clubs, especially around Gallipoli and Otranto. Torre dell’Orso is becoming a favourite beach.

The Big Gay Podcast from Puglia carried out a Best of Puglia 2020 survey last year. We invited people who had visited Puglia and those living here to tell their favourite destination in Puglia, their favourite dish, the best restaurant, the best beaches etc.. 3,054 votes were cast.

Gallipoli was the favourite destination. This should come as no surprise. Gallipoli is still the focus of Puglia’s gay summer scene with its famous beaches and clubs. But after Gallipoli (37%) gay tourists enjoyed visiting Polignano a Mare (17%), then Bari (13%), Lecce (11%) and Ostuni (8%).

Lido Pôr do Sol in Baia Verde, a gay friendly beach club, was the favourite of both visitors and locals, with Spiaggia d’Ayala coming second.

Naturist beaches are always popular with gay travellers, perhaps one of the main draws of Puglia. We were surprised that most visitors preferred the private, rocky coves and shelves of Punta della Suina to the golden sand and scrub of Spiaggia D’Ayala. That and the great food Puglia has to offer.

Our survey found that favourite dishes enjoyed while on vacation in Puglia included Orecchiette con cime di rapa (38%), pesce crudo (27%) and bombette (12%).

LGBTQ events — such as pride parades and festivals — encourage so many people to travel to and within Europe. In Puglia we usually have three such events Bari Pride, Taranto Pride and the one that Puglia is best known for, Salento/Puglia Pride. The better known and higher profile these events become the more tourists they are likely to attract, along with the economic advantages of their spending power.

The Big Gay Podcast from Puglia ha condotto lo scorso anno un sondaggio Best of Puglia 2020.

Gay Puglia - the Big Gay Podcast from Puglia. Serving up Puglia’s finest food and destination recommendations. Italy’s best naturist and gay beaches are in Puglia.

What is the point of being an LGBT * guide?  I mean: if a place is beautiful it is for everyone, not just for straight people or for LGBT +, don't you think?

Our guides to Puglia are inclusive. They are as relevant to non-LGBTQ travellers. When it comes to destinations we make the same recommendations. Don’t leave Puglia without seeing Polignano and Alberobello; for the best beaches head to Gargano or Salento; enjoy the creamy baroque of Lecce.

We offer the same tips: drink your coffee standing at a bar to feel like an Italian; don’t expect to walk into a restaurant for a late lunch at 3pm; make sure your accommodation has mosquito screens; don’t be put off driving in Puglia, we are not the Amalfi coast…

But there are extra considerations for gay travellers that our straight friends don’t have to think about. Can I give my husband a kiss on the cheek without fear of a violent attack? Can I hold his hand without risking my life. I don’t want to arrive at a masseria to find that they refuse to allow me to sleep in the same bed as my husband of 14 years. And yes even here in Puglia some accommodation will still refuse my husband and I a double bed.

We want to feel welcome, respected and safe on holiday without having to deal with such prejudices. The Big Gay Podcast from Puglia includes information on gay friendly businesses. Bars, restaurants, clubs and beaches where we are able to be our authentic selves.

Visitors who come to our website for advice want to know that they will be treated with respect and dignity, irrespective of gender, age, sexual orientation or sexual identification.

When visitors ask about a tour guide we always recommend Pietro Calabrese of Puglialy (www.puglialy.com). He is an excellent tour guide, who makes sure all his clients feel they get the best from their Puglia experience. That is why we recommend Pietro in the first place. But we would not recommend him if he treated gay clients differently.

Pietro, who is straight, once told us, “What difference does being gay make? It is just like having blonde hair, or brown eyes. Why does it mean I should treat you any differently?”

Likewise LGBTQ tourists usually prefer to stay at LGBTQ friendly accommodation. There are many beautiful masserie and trulli that can be found across our region. We recommend a variety, whether gay owned or not.

Anima bed & wellness (https://www.animapuglia.it/) is owned and run by Sieb and Francesco. They do not market themselves as a gay business. They have beautiful spa and wellness facilities with accommodation as impressive as the olive grove it is located in. We like to recommend them because we know gay visitors will be comfortable staying there, without judgement.

The UNTWO report found that LGBTQ friendly places or businesses that celebrate diversity and make an extra effort to demonstrate that all are welcome are frequently rewarded with the loyalty of LGBTQ customers and the economic bonus it brings.

The Big Gay Podcast from Puglia include informazioni sulle attività gay friendly.

What degree of acceptance do you find in Puglia?  Are there still people who look at you in a strange way or do you feel at home?

Che grado di accettazione trovate in Puglia? Ci sono ancora persone che vi guardano in maniera strana oppure vi sentite a casa?

There are still plenty of places around the world where identifying as LGBTQ isn’t safe, nor is it comfortable — for locals or for tourists.

The LGBTQ community are very accustomed to concealing their nature, fearing that if they openly express and reveal their sexual orientation of gender identity, they will be threatened or badly treated.

Therefore it comes naturally not to draw attention to ourselves.

Puglia is not London, New York, Paris or Madrid. But on the whole we find Puglia surprisingly tolerant and inclusive. There is a degree of acceptance, even among the older generation. We put this down to Puglia’s rich and diverse history. The region has always been a land of passage, a gateway to other cultures. Long before invasion by social media Puglia was conquered by Greeks, Romans, Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Normans, Aragonese, French...

Quite often any “strange” looks are the other way around. We warn visitors not to stare at the well groomed southern Italian male too much. North American’s especially find the southern Italian male obsession with waxing their bodies - chest, abs, arms, legs - and especially sculpted eyebrows… confusing. We tell them that it is not uncommon to see same sex friends in Puglia walking arm in arm.

Appreciating cultural differences the other way around is part of the learning experience and tolerance we all should respect.
