In The Heart of Puglia
A borough of fishermen, a town founded on the sea and from the sea, a great white square where the houses of the centre, many the abode of fishermen are daubed with lime. And then churches, commotion and squares, noble palaces of the 18th century or of the Murattiana period. Here and there testimony and remains of medieval fortifications that tell of its ancient history. Golden, sandy beaches with crystal clear waters a treasure chest of a living maritime culture that lives in the sea and comes from the sea. But Monopoli is also agricultural, country districts, ancient olive trees, fortified farmhouses and churches that all tell of a unique city.
The City of Monopoli Tourist Association have relaunched their official website with a wealth of information on Monopoli, one of Puglia’s most popular places to visit and to stay. It is one of the most comprehensive and detailed tourism websites and well worth taking the time to read if you are planning a trip to Monopoli or considering it as your base to stay in Puglia.
Very helpfully it has a News and Events section, including information on this year’s PhEST – See Beyond the Sea, Monopoli’s international festival of photography and art, now in its 7th year, due to take place from late summer to early autumn.
